Stratford and the 2012 Olympics

London will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2010, and the Stratford area will play a key role in the games. Stratford International, providing domestic services on the High Speed 1 lines to UK stations, will be a key access point to the London Olympic Park and Westfield Stratford City, attracting thousands of Olympic spectators from international stations St Pancras, Ebbsfleet and Ashford.

The regeneration includes the new "Stratford City" development scheme, 13.5 million square feet of mixed-use site that is intended to become one of London's metropolitan hubs and will allow for an estimated 5,000 new homes and create 30,000 jobs. It will be constructed around Stratford International and is due to be completed by 2020. The project includes:

5 million square feet of commercial building development

1.5 million square feet of new retail and leisure facilities, with over 100 units

2000 hotel rooms

New schooling facilities for primary and secondary

New healthcare facilities including a walk-in centre and health care centre

Over 1 million feet of office space

Youth and social facilities

Community-beneficial facilities including an employment bureau, library, visitor information centre, day-care nursery facilities, public service and security offices, civic offices and places of worship

Parts of the Olympic Village are intended to be converted into permanent residences after the 2012 Olympics.

The games have brought people together, symbolising the light of spirit, knowledge and life; they will be seen by billions of people from across the globe, and hundreds of nations will compete in over 30 different sporting and athletic events.
